Of Theme parks and Sandboxes

sandbox

I’ve already ranted, ad nauseum on the MMO design page, about the virtues and pitfalls of sandbox versus theme park game design but recently I think I might have stumbled upon a definition that works better.  I think the problem revolves around the overuse of the term “sandbox”.  My idea of a sandbox game comes from Ultima Online where the players were given a world without any structured content and essentially just told to go out and make their own fun, and we did just that for many

New Firefall PvP trailer

firefall2

I mentioned a while back that the upcoming scifi MMO/shooter Firefall has made my list of games that I’m jazzed about.  Well a new trailer showing off some of the game’s PvP (5v5 in this case) content has me salivating already.  I’ve already stated that this game will without a doubt be the spiritual successor to the Tribes empire, which for me brings with it a strong nostalgia factor.  As far as I can see the gameplay and graphics make it something akin to a TF2/Tribes lovechild

New Xsyon dev. hints at future fun?

xsyon

I’ll admit I never heard of this game before Massively did a little blurb about it a while back.  The game’s obscurity may be it’s only saving grace at this point after what has apparently been a rather rocky launch.  In their own words the game is described as “…a unique fantasy role playing sandbox MMOPRG that allows players to create their own virtual realities as they form tribes, build towns, shape landscapes, create quests and build an economy”.  The game is set in

The fine line between griefing and competition

make-love-not-warcraft

Anyone who knows me is well aware that I throughly appreciate a bit of well executed griefing.  This includes being on the receiving end of such treatment as well.  While it may be temporarily aggravating I’ve come to the conclusion that getting griefed just has the longterm effect of giving me more motivation to improve my own character/gear/whatever so that similar situations do not repeat themselves.  Also, having a bit of a score to settle with a particular player/guild is also a nice meta-game in and of itself.  It

Are You Playing Rift?

ss187-full

I’m a gamer and currently playing Rift.  I started tanking in Greenscale’s Blight (GSB) raid dungeon and consuming end-game content.

I wrote several drafts last week about Rift and it sounded like a blog explaining the game, my play style, my gaming experiences, which anyone can do. Instead, I will just start writing within the structure of my game goals in Rift, how I am getting to doing that, and my experiences in playing the game.

I’m picking the end of Week 8 of Rift as
