More details on Guild Wars 2 “World vs. World” system

I posted, just recently, of my personal concerns over the endgame content available at launch for Guild Wars 2 and then a few days later ArenaNet decides to drop this golden bomb of PvP information making me look, even more, like a stuttering jackass.  Well here’s the lowdown if you haven’t already skimmed the Q&A.  Remember DAoC frontiers?  Ok, now imagine that, but bigger, better and gilded in awesome.

Essentially the RvR *ahem* sorry WvW battles will be fought between 3 rival servers.  Each server will have their own “home map” that will then be linked to the 4th center map that will be the real PvP hotbed.  Each server will have a portal keep located within the center map that will serve as the starting area for any incursions.  There is apparently a capture system in place for strategic locations within each of the maps (towers and fortresses were mentioned) and here’s the part that really got me jazzed:

I can say that there is no wrong way to take part in WvW. If you are a solo player, small group player or large group player there is always something for you to accomplish. If the enemy is held up in a fully upgraded fortress and you are not the type of player that enjoys large scale combat, you can simply cut off their supply routes, and deprive the defenders of resources they need in order to maintain their defense. If you are planning on just working together as a small guild, you can easily take towers that cut reinforcements, and supplies off.

This was ever my criticism of DAoC and later Warhammer frontier systems.  It would inevitably boil down to standing in front of the keep doors hitting the same 4 keys over and over.  The only thing that made it tolerable was the rare instance when they marshaled enough forces to form some sort of opposition.  Then it was good times had by all.  Unfortunately the majority of the experience was RvD (realm vs door).  At least with this system you can go out and interfere with the “supply routes” that are helping keep that door standing.  He wasn’t very specific as to if the “supply routes” were players funneling supplies into the keep or actual NPC’s running a circuit but either way it sounds like a good time.  Hopefully if the strategic attention is a bit less focused on a single objective this will help promote more small party battles as opposed as to zergy mob mentality.
